But where is it?!? We have looked multiple times for it, down trails in the forests and we still can’t find it! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
It is to the southwest of the covered bridge along the Yellow Trail. There is a stone plaque in front of the tree and a small bench nearby.
Looks like shagbark hickory to me. How do you differentiate the two.
There are at least 4 different species of hickory with shaggy bark. Three of them are discussed here: http://bioimages.vanderbilt.edu/pages/carya-compare-shag.htm and the fourth is the uncommon nutmeg hickory (Cary myristiciformis), which is actually relatively common in bottomland hardwood forests in central Arkansas!
